Original Art Stories: The Evolution of A Golden Age Story - Heroic Comics & Tony Tallarico!

Image
It’s very rare that an opportunity to dissect a sixty year old comic book story arises, but thanks to some fortuitous purchases of late, we now have that chance. Heroic Comics was published by Eastern Color Printing Co./Famous Funnies, and ran from 1940 through to 1955, lasting 97 issues in total. Initially titled Reg’lar Fellers Heroic Comics, the series would further be renamed, first to Heroic Comics to New Heroic Comics. The series was finally wound up over a battle with the Comics Code Authority, who objected to the strong war themes that the book began to carry towards the end of its run. I’ll be running some of those war stories in the coming weeks, so you’ll be able to make your own mind up. The main issue with the CCA was that the series contributed to juvenile delinquency in the form of excessive violence. Yeah, right. The premise of the series was a simple one – they featured real life heroes, as opposed to fictional superheroes. Great stuff and rarely seen these days,

Welcome to Part VI of the life story of Rich Buckler !  Following on from Part V , Rich discusses the creation of one of his most famous creations, Deathlok.  Keep watching this series as there's some exciting news that, once the ducks are all lined up in a row, will thrill a lot of people.  If you enjoy reading these articles, and if you like the art you're looking at, then feel free to contact Rich directly and arrange a commissio n .  Rich's schedule is fairly open right at the moment and Rich is more than capable of doing some stunning work.  Give it some serious consideration and spread the word. Before we start I'd like to point out that all of the cover images shown in this post are Rich's own favourite DC covers.  When Rich points out what he loved drawing, well, you can see why people loved those covers then and still love them now. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy Rich Buckler's life story, exclusive to this blog.

Memories Of Adrienne

I can vividly recall the first conversation I ever had with Gene Colan – after all how does one forget a conversation with a legend? I’ll answer that for you, you don’t forget, you remember. Gene was gracious and answered all of my gushing questions and offered up a lot more besides. He sounded then, as he still does, warm and friendly and he seemed to be tickled pink that someone on the other side of the planet was interested in him and his work. Towards the end of the conversation Gene asked if I was married. At the time I wasn’t, indeed I had just finally separated from a relationship and was fairly down in the dumps, and, for reasons I still don’t understand, I found myself telling him this. He listened, quietly, and then told me about how depressed he was when he and his wife had split and how he felt that he’d never find love again. He told me how the days became a lot darker and he’d resigned himself to a life on his own, the classic situation that a lot of us have gone

Adrienne Colan, wife of Gene Colan, Passes

From Clifford Meth : Adrienne Colan passed away last night or sometime this morning. We do not have all of the details yet. Erik Colan broke the news to Gene about 20 minutes ago and then Gene and I spoke. All things considered, he is holding up well. Note added at 4:55 pm: The medical examiner has not yet determined the day nor the cause of death. ------------------------ This news comes as a shock, but considering recent events, it's not a great surprise.  All of our thoughts go out to Gene and his family and hopefully they can all get through this most difficult of times.  Now some of the more scurrilous rumour mongers will finally leave Gene and his children alone for a while, allow them to grieve in peace and recover from this massive of blows.

We Made The Washington Post!

In a most excellent article, journalist Brigid Schulte tackles the New York Apartment scammers .  The article was spawned by Brigid's own experiences and the comments she found on this very blog , focusing on what happened to us, and several others, when we tried to book an apartment in New York.  Luckily Brigid took notice of what she read, which verified her own feelings and managed to not get ripped off - good for her! Go and have a read, and, more importantly, pass the word on to everyone and anyone who is thinking of travelling anywhere and booking.  First rule of thumb - NEVER pay anyone via a money transfer system such as Western Union or Moneygram.  They assist the scammers, and once your money is gone, those companies couldn't care less.  They've got their cut.  Make sure you pay in such a way that you've got recourse - if it's a money transfer then it's a scam, as far as I'm concerned.
